Apple has finally entered the foldable market. The iPhone Duo goes on pre-order on 16 October and reaches the first customers on 23 October 2026. Samsung, meanwhile, launched its eighth-generation Fold in August, this time in two versions: the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the larger Fold 8 Ultra. For the first time, buyers can choose between two premium foldables from the two biggest smartphone brands. This guide compares them on design, screens, cameras, battery, software and price, and ends with a clear recommendation for each type of buyer.
Quick verdict
Choose the iPhone Duo if you already use an iPhone, Mac or Apple Watch, value water resistance, and want the strongest build quality on the market.
Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if you want a lighter, thinner phone, a lower price and a platform that has been refined over eight generations.
Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if an optical zoom camera and the largest screen matter more to you than weight and cost.

Design and durability
The two companies took different paths. Apple built the iPhone Duo with a titanium enclosure over an aluminium internal frame, a 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The result feels solid, but it comes at a cost: 254 g and 11.3 mm when folded. That is a lot for a phone you carry every day.
Samsung chose to make the Fold 8 lighter. At 201 g and 9.7 mm folded, it sits more comfortably in a jacket pocket and is easier to hold for long periods. The Fold 8 Ultra weighs 215 g and is the slimmest of the three: 8.9 mm folded and 4.1 mm unfolded.
Water and dust protection is where Apple has a clear lead. The iPhone Duo is rated IP68, the same standard as regular iPhones. Both Samsung models are rated IP48. The first digit in that rating refers to dust protection, and a 4 means the phone is protected only against particles larger than 1 mm. Sand is a real risk for any hinge, so if you spend summer weekends on the beach in Limassol or Ayia Napa, this difference deserves serious attention.
Apple also replaced Face ID with Touch ID in the side button. It works well, but owners used to Face ID will need some time to adjust.
Displays
Both phones open into a 7.6-inch main screen, roughly the size of an iPad mini. Apple’s panel refreshes at up to 120 Hz and reaches 3,000 nits outdoors. Samsung quotes the same 3,000-nit peak for both the 7.6-inch Fold 8 and the 8-inch Ultra.
The cover screen is where everyday use happens, because most quick tasks are done with the phone closed. The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display, close to the old iPhone mini. It is fine for messages and notifications, but typing on it is less comfortable than on a standard phone. The Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover screen, and the Ultra’s 6.5-inch outer display works like a full-size smartphone. If you expect to keep your foldable closed most of the day, this is a strong argument for the Ultra.
Opened, both phones are well suited to reading documents, editing spreadsheets and watching video. Apple has also announced Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo, arriving later this year. It will turn the phone into a pocket notepad for handwritten notes and signatures.

Performance
The iPhone Duo uses the A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro; Apple does not publish RAM figures. Both Samsung models run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy with 12 GB of RAM, or 16 GB in the 1 TB version. In daily use, neither phone will feel slow: apps open instantly, games run smoothly, and two apps side by side cause no visible lag. The real difference in performance is not raw power but how well the software uses the large screen, covered below.
Cameras
Looking at the iPhone Duo specs, the camera system is simpler than on the iPhone 18 Pro. There are two 48 MP rear cameras, a main and an ultra-wide, with no separate telephoto lens. The 2x option is an optical-quality 12 MP crop from the main sensor, and video goes up to 4K at 120 fps. For selfies and calls, the cover screen has a 12 MP Center Stage camera, and the main screen hides a camera under the display. Samsung uses 10 MP cameras on both screens.
The standard Fold 8 also has two rear cameras (50 MP main and 50 MP ultra-wide) and can record 8K video at 30 fps. The Fold 8 Ultra moves to a 200 MP main sensor and adds a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. For portraits, concerts and travel photography, that lens makes a visible difference.
Battery life and charging
Battery capacity is almost identical: 4,883 mAh in the iPhone Duo and 4,800 mAh in the Fold 8, with 5,000 mAh in the Ultra. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of typical use, and up to 31 hours of video playback on the main screen or 44 hours on the cover screen.
Charging speeds are closer than they might seem. Apple does not state a wattage, but the iPhone Duo reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60 W adapter and supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25 W. Both Samsung models charge at up to 45 W with a compatible charger and up to 20 W wirelessly.
Software and AI: iOS 27 vs One UI 9
iOS 27 was redesigned for the iPhone Duo. On the main screen, two apps can run side by side, Safari can open a second window, and a video can stay pinned at the top while you work in another app. The phone can also be used half-folded, like a small laptop, and StandBy mode works when it is closed.
Samsung’s One UI 9 runs on Android 17 and is promised up to seven major OS updates. Its multitasking tools have been developed since the first Fold in 2019, and this maturity shows: split-screen layouts, floating windows and app pairs are more flexible than Apple’s first version.
There is one important detail for buyers in Cyprus. Siri AI, Apple’s new assistant based on Apple Intelligence, is not available in the European Union at launch. Apple links this to the requirements of the Digital Markets Act. Galaxy AI features, such as Call Brief and Now Nudges, work in Europe.
Ecosystem also matters. If you use a Mac, AirPods or an Apple Watch, the iPhone Duo fits in without effort. If your other devices are Windows, Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds, the Fold 8 is the more practical choice.

Price in Cyprus
The iPhone Duo is the most expensive option. In Germany it starts at €2,299 for 256 GB, with 512 GB at €2,549, 1 TB at €3,049 and 2 TB at €3,799. Both Samsung models cost less, although their European prices vary more between retailers. Current prices, availability and trade-in offers in Cyprus are listed on the Prestigio Plaza product pages.
When choosing storage, keep in mind that a large screen encourages more video, offline maps and downloaded files. For most buyers, 512 GB is the sensible minimum for a phone they plan to keep for four or five years. The 2 TB iPhone Duo is aimed mainly at people who shoot a lot of 4K video.
Which one should you buy?
For current iPhone users, the iPhone Duo is the obvious choice. Your apps, photos, messages and accessories move over without friction, and the IP68 rating removes one of the main concerns about foldables.
For Android users and owners of older Fold models, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 offers a better balance of weight, price and software maturity.
If camera quality is your priority, the Fold 8 Ultra is the only one of the three with an optical telephoto lens. It is also the best option for anyone who wants a large cover screen.
Finally, there is the question of generations. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable, while Samsung is on its eighth. Buyers who prefer proven technology may lean towards Samsung, while those who trust Apple’s track record with first-generation products will be comfortable with the Duo. Whichever model you choose, a protective case and a cover screen protector are worth buying on day one, since repairs to a folding display are expensive.
FAQ
Is the iPhone Duo worth it?
For people already in the Apple ecosystem who want a tablet-sized screen in their pocket, yes. If you mainly use your phone closed, a regular iPhone 18 Pro Max is lighter and less expensive.
Which foldable has the better camera?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, because it is the only model with a 3x optical telephoto lens. It also has a 200 MP main sensor. Between the iPhone Duo and the standard Fold 8, the results are close.
Is the iPhone Duo water-resistant?
Yes. It is rated IP68, which means it is protected against dust and can survive immersion in water.
Does Siri AI work on the iPhone Duo in Cyprus?
Not at launch. Siri AI is unavailable in the EU because of the Digital Markets Act. The standard Siri assistant works as usual.
When can I buy the iPhone Duo?
Pre-orders open on 16 October 2026 and sales begin on 23 October. Check the Prestigio Plaza website for local availability.
Should I buy a foldable phone in 2026?
Foldables are now durable, fast and supported for many years, so the main questions are weight and price. If you read, work or watch video on your phone a lot, a foldable is worth considering.
Conclusion
There is no single best foldable phone 2026 has to offer for everyone. The iPhone Duo leads in build quality, water resistance and integration with Apple devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter, thinner and costs less, while the Ultra adds the best camera and cover screen. Visit a Prestigio Plaza store to hold both phones in your hand, or pre-order the iPhone Duo online from 16 October.
